Ramadan is just around the corner and a number of restaurants around are gearing up for their lavish Ramadan Buffets. From free-flowing juices to a selection of salads, bread's to mains, and let’s not forget about desserts, shall we? At times the choice is so big, we really can’t decide as to what to try and what to skip.
Flavours restaurant located at Courtyard by Marriot Al Barsha happens to be one such spot offering a selective yet lavish Iftar. The buffet starts with a selection of soft drinks including Jelab, Ayran, Lemonade and more. Right after this is a selection of fruits, exquisite nuts and dates to relish upon.

Right after the meal starters, is a wide selection of salads and cold mezzeh including but not limited to Hummus, Labneh, Fattoush, Baba Ghanoush, Cheese, Olives, Pickled veggies. The choice is really wide and also very eye pleasing.

Next was a special counter for hot mezzeh which had a short selection of samosas, kibbeh, pakoras and spinach pastry. This counter also made live shawarma as per your selection of ingredients and choice.

Bread's were next on the buffet; the most appealing counter after the desserts (of course 😉). A nicely decorated Ramadan theme bread station, this counter had everything from buns to bagels & loaves to flatbreads; perfect accompaniments to the cold mezzeh and soups.

The main course also has called for an appetizing variety on the plate. From vast meat selections to seafood biryani, it had something for everything. A quick glimpse below would show the variety of dishes available-

Finally came the best part of the Iftar; Desserts 😊. The selection was so phenomenal, it was fit for not only Iftar but would also be a great treat for Suhoor. Kunafa, Umm Ali, Lemon cake, Fruit Tarts, uhhhh…. so much to try!

The interiors and feel of the restaurant have also been upgraded to an Arabic style especially for the month of Ramadan. The Arabic style table runners or the cute hand painted bowls, each and every detail made the place warmer and more welcoming.

Flavours restaurant is also hosting a charity Iftar on the 14th of May 2019. Following picture provides the details for the same.

3 Shawarmas you must try across Dubai!

If you are in the Middle East or have ever lived there, you would definitely know that Shawarma happens to be one of the most common and happening street food to have on the go. For all of you who don’t know, Shawarma is basically a roll or sandwich which is made of pita or saj bread filled with Chicken or Meat shred. Relished with a dash of tahini, some places even add veggies to it making it a wholesome and filling meal in itself. Spicy and regular versions are available in most places whereas some places have even special versions of it! Following are the 3 must-try Shawarmas if you’re in Dubai-

Al Reef Bakery

Being in the bakery business for years in Dubai, Al Reef Bakery is very well known for its Manakish and Arabic sweets. The place also serves some amazing shawarma’s which not many people know about. Priced at AED10, their shawarma is made in a lightly grilled saj bread with juicy chicken filling. 1 sandwich is super filling in itself. This place also served fresh bread, sweets, cakes and a lot more. Al Reef bakery is located at 2 places in Dubai including Al Karama and Jumeirah 3.

Al Mallah

The beloved neighbourhood Arabic restaurant; Al Mallah has been in business for as long as we can remember. People head to this place to try some amazing Arabic food including hummus, fatoush, grills and a lot more! 1 such thing happens to be their spicy shawarma. Stuffed in a slice of pita bread, the chicken is very juicy and has a spicy after taste. Priced at AED 9, this is a cheap steal to get quality shawarma around town! Al Mallah is located at multiple locations across Dubai like Al Satwa, Al Hudaiba, Qusais and more.

Hashtag Café

A relatively new café in town, this place tripled in size within a year or so. It happens to very famous amongst people living in and around Al Barsha. Serving multi-cuisine food, they specialize in Arabic food like Felafil’s, grills and shawarma. Their shawarma is slightly special, as they serve it with a lip-smacking spicy mayo. This really adds up to the flavour. Priced at AED 15, the sandwich is worth a shot at least once.

3 desi joints to try in Bur Dubai for breakfast under AED 10

Everyone craves for a wholesome breakfast which has a lavish spread and is super filling. But at times your wallet says otherwise! But in which rule book is it written that we need to pay big to eat filling? Here are 3 spots in Bur Dubai where you can have a tummy filling breakfast for less than AED 10!

Dorrat Al Bahr

Famously known as the restaurant of Nehal Kokiwala, this place is located in the dingy lanes of Bur Dubai, but do not judge the place by its looks! This place is more of a Sindhi breakfast joint which serves Koki (A Sindhi flatbread made with onions and spices, roasted crisp on a tava), Dal Pakwan, Aloo paratha, Methi paratha and more. It is preferable to get a takeaway rather than sitting and eating, as the place gets super crowded. (P.S. it's so crowded on Fridays, that you have to wait for an hour or so to grab something to eat). This place has some really good Dal pakwan other than its world-famous (literally!) koki. Prices range from AED 4 – 8 per plate.

Rokn Al Fahedi Cafeteria

A relatively new joint, this place serves similar breakfast as Dorrat. They also have a selection of parathas, koki, Dal pakwan and also Gujarati delicacies like thepla & poha.  Their koki is slightly different but a good pair with the spicy chilli pickle and dal they offer with it. Priced at AED 4, it is a very filling meal. For a few, 1 koki can cover as brunch 😉. This place has no seating but one can stand and eat on tables offered outside the restaurant.

Al Rajwah

An out of the box Indian street food café, this place serves freshly fried samosas, lip-smacking chaat and Chinese dhokla in the evenings alongside freshly made dosas and grilled sandwiches. Their morning options are nothing less. They have a great mix of breakfast options including Idly, Dhokla, Vada Pav and Poha. Most of their items are priced less than AED 10 per plate. This place has very minimal seating but also has outdoor tables where we can stand and enjoy meals! A perfect café for takeaway and snack food.

3 Baking Tips that will help you get a perfectly baked cake

Tip 1 – Use of Vinegar

The use of vinegar in a cake batter helps activate the effervescent agents (baking soda or baking powder) used in the recipe. There is a slight bit of science behind it (we all know the cooking and chemistry are similar, don’t we!). The mix of vinegar which is acidic in nature and soda which is basic in nature releases ions causing the formation of nothing but carbon dioxide. This makes the cake batter airy and hence giving you a fluffy and moist cake!

Figure 1 - Flat v/s frothy cake batter

Tip 2 – Fold not whisk

When making a cake batter or any baking batter, in particular, do not try to use a whisk for mixing. Rather use a spatula to do so. It may take longer to incorporate all the ingredients and make the batter lump-free, but this helps add in a lot of air to the batter making it light and fluffy.

Figure 2 - Whisking v/s folding

Tip 3 – Dust your baking pans

If you are a regular or a once in a blue moon baker, you’d have always been advice to grease the baking pan before pouring in the batter, but has anyone advice you to dust the pan? Dusting the baking pan with flour after greasing it with butter helps release the cake from the pan even more easily. Not only that, but this also reduces the chances of burning cake edges which is usually the case after greasing a pan and baking cakes

What is a Tres Leche (Milk) cake? Probably one of those fancy cakes we would get at a French pastry shop? Or is it something created a professional pastry chef? Maybe, but in simple terms, it's just a slice of cake soaked in a three-milk mixture including FULL-FAT MILK, CONDENSED MILK & EVAPORATED MILK, topped with cream. Let’s not get into the technicality, but one thing is for sure, if you haven’t tried one as of now, you’re missing out on a lot. (P.S. don’t blame me if you hate desserts in general :P). Below are the top 3 Tres Leche cakes to try out across Dubai-

Molten Me

Molten Me located at Wasl Vita mall in Jumeirah 1, this place is a dessert parlour catering to a variety of dishes. Famous for their ‘MOLTEN’ cakes, their Milk Cakes were no less! Available in 3 flavours including Saffron, Coconut & Oreo, the saffron one is the best selection if you like rustic flavours. Coconut lovers are definitely in for a treat as this milk cake was the moistest one. The coconut flakes on the cake top just enhance the texture to a whole new level. For the Oreo one well, you’d like it if you’re an Oreo fan 😉.

Highway 311

Located in JLT. Highway 311 is a fantastic restaurant serving Mexican and Peruvian cuisine. Originating from recipes of Mexican and Latin American descend, Milk Cake here was very authentic. Having a hint of cinnamon, there was a kick to the generic Milk Cake. Slightly dense at a bite, this cake was super filling too!

London Dairy Café

London Dairy Café is at multiple locations including but not limited to Sheikh Zayad Road, Oud Metha & La Mer. Serving selections from starters to desserts, this place also has a choice of High Tea selections; perfect for an afternoon tea affair. Their Saffron Milk Cake is just plain fabulous. The milk had a whole new flavour altogether. The fluffy cake & tasty milk are a match made in heaven.

We recently made a creative video for a competition. It was my children's efforts purely. They took an old brownie recipe of mine and turned it into a special meaningful, and metaphorical recipe with a strange concept.

The video gets right into it as soon as it starts. We are introduced to this frame in which different ingredients come together. The background music is chilling, with sound effects of the forest to further its ritualistic theme. The ingredients are kind of sacrificed as soon as they enter the bowl, that's the emotion they were going for. The poem really helps clarify that.
Here it is:

All good things come with a price
The gods want the darkness to see the fire
and melt away before it

The necessities and the luxuries come together

and mothers watch as little lives wither
the essence of the sacrifice is reminded before
flowers blossom in this darkness
while the bitter ones remain unchanged

their pedestal stands decorated
with the finest linen sheets
they march into the flames for the final good deed
the heat presented them with many a great battles
and the folks grew impatient and rattled

out of the fire rises something beautiful
the bitter, the sweet,
the dark and the light
the living and the burnt

made into something of delight

Explanation:
All good things come with a price- we are introduced to the theme of the sacrifice-ritual of the video
good thing being the brownie
the gods want the darkness to see the fire and melt away before it- reference to dark chocolate being melted
the necessities and the luxuries come together- sugar and butter reference- how one is a necessity and one is a luxury, but they both come together for this recipe
and mothers watch as little lives wither- reference to eggs
the essence of the sacrifice is reminded before- translates into "we add vanilla essence before"
flowers blossom in this darkness- all purpose flour is added to this chocolaty(dark) mixture
while the bitter ones remain unchanged- the cocoa powder is still bitter
their pedestal stands decorated with the finest linen sheets- the baking tray is supposed to be layered with butter paper
they march into the flames for the final good deed- put into the oven so these different ingredients come together as one- the final good deed
the heat presented them with many a great battles- reference to the ritual
the folks grew impatient and rattled- reference to how people get impatient when the batter is in the oven and they can't wait for it to come out

out of the fire rises something beautiful- reference to the brownie
the bitter the sweet- reference to cocoa powder and sugar

the dark and the light - dark chocolate and butter
the living and the burnt- eggs and cocoa powder

made into something of delight- delight being the brownie

Hope you guys enjoyed the creativity! Here's a link to the video
